Doing something constructive with your free time will help increase your chances of getting a job or a place on a course.  Do some voluntary work or take up a hobby - both will help you develop skills that appeal to employers and admissions tutors; skills such as time management, dedication, a will to succeed, being able to deal with people of different ages and from different backgrounds.  It will also make you a far more interesting person to talk to.
