Getting active

Getting involved in any sort of activity that gets you out of the house and mixing with other people in a healthy and stimulating environment will do wonders for your social life and your personal well-being.

Getting involved in a sport is the most obvious way of getting active but it's not the only one.  You could join a local conservation group, try walking instead of jumping in the car or getting the bus, alternatively join a drama group.

Contact Bolton's Outdoor Activities service to find out more about what they offer including water sports, walking, climbing, mountain biking, residentials and camping.  They can also advise you on how to get involved in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme.  You can also get involved in a wide range of physical activities at Bolton Lads' and Girls' Club.

As the 2012 Olympic Games draw ever nearer have you thought about getting involved as a Young Games Maker?  You need to be aged 16-18 to be considered.  Alternatively, if you are 16-19 and you are not currently in education, employment or training and you have less than 5 GCSEs you should consider the Personal Best programme.  It's a free pre-employment course that uses the inspiriation of the opportunity to volunteer at the 2012 Olympics.

If you're more of a creative person than a sporty one then that's fine, you can still get active in other ways.  The Octagon Theatre in Bolton has its own youth theatre as well as other projects and initiatives designed specifically for young people.  There's also the well established Bolton Little Theatre.  Alternatively you could join a local amateur dramatics group - these are often run by local church and community groups.

If there's an activity you want to get involved with and you can't find the details here or on our Free Time and Volunteering factsheet, then try one or more of the following:

  • Have a look at Bolton's online directory of local services and community groups
  • Google it!
  • See if there's a relevant group on Facebook that you can 'Like'
