Housing

If you need help finding accommodation download our Housing factsheet for more information.

Having your own place does have its plus points.  You can come and go as you please, pick your own furniture, have your mates round as often as you like.  The downside is - it all costs a lot of money and comes with a load of responsibility.

It might be boring but you do have to think about paying for:

  • Regular mortgage or rent payment - usually payable every month
  • A deposit - most landlords will ask for at least one month's rent in advance and if you are buying you might have to stump up a large percentage of the money you want to borrow before you can get a mortgage.
  • Bills - heating, lighting, council tax, phone
  • Food
  • All those luxuries you don't want to live without: the internet, phone rental (if you have a landline), satellite TV
  • Household items like washing powder, cleaning products, toilet rolls - they all add up
  • Repairs
  • Repayments on furniture/white goods you've bought on credit

So if you have control over when you leave home make sure you can cover all these costs.
