Leaving care or homeless

There are a lot of organisations locally that can support you in your search for accommodation, whatever your circumstances.

I'm leaving care

Bolton's Leaving Care Team help young care leavers aged 16-21 (up to 24 if in higher education) to lead an independent life.  You can contact them on 01204 337376.  The Leaving Care Team works closely with a number of local housing organisations and we have a Connexions Personal Adviser based with them.

I need somewhere to stay now

If you are in urgent need of accommodation ask your friends or family if  you can stay with them until you can find somewhere more permanent.  Alternatively contact Homeless Welfare on 01204 335830 or Social Services on 337777.  You can call into the Homeless Welfare service, Monday to Thursday, 2.00pm-4.30pm and 2.00pm-4.00pm on Friday.  You can also make an appointment with them.

Bolton Young Persons Housing Scheme (BYPHS) run a project called Nightstay.  This is emergency overnight accommodation for young people aged 16-21.  Places are limited and are only allocated on referral from agencies like the Leaving Care Team, Connexions or any other specialist service for young people.  16/17 year olds call 01204 337376.  18-21 year olds call 01204 335830.

Shelterline is a free helpline for people who are homeless or have housing problems.  Call 0808 800 4444, 8am-8pm Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm weekends.  Calls are free from UK landlines and main mobile networks (Virgin, Orange, 3, T-mobile, Vodafone and O2).

BASE - Bolton Foyer provide short term accommodation for 16-25 year olds.  Find them on Marsden Road (BL1 2PF) or call them on 01204 454950.

The Bond Board will help people aged 18-65 who are on the streets by providing a written guarantee that takes the place of a cash deposit for a property.  In Bolton, they will only deal with people who have been through a Housing Options interview with the Housing Advice service on Silverwell Lane (tel: 01204 335900).

The Albert Kennedy Trust help young people up to the age of 25 who are (or think they might be) Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Trans, homeless or living in crisis and living in a violent, hostile or abusive home.  Contact them on 0161 2283308 or email pwmanchester@akt.org.uk.

Do you have to move out?

When you don't get on with your parents/carers life can seem unbearable, but moving out isn't always the best way to solve your family disputes.  Time 2 Talk is a local mediation service.  They work with young people who are at risk of becoming homeless and their parents/carers.  Contact them on 01204 335945.

Run away or thinking of running away?

Talk... Don't Walk is a 24/7 helpline for young people who have or are thinking about running away.

The Runaway Helpline is operated by Missing People.  It's a national, confidential 24 hour freephone service for anyone who has run away from home or care or been forced to leave home.  You can text them even if you have no credit left on your mobile.
