Getting around

learning to drive

In today's job market being able to drive could improve your chances of finding employment.

What can I drive?

It is illegal to drive any vehicle without a valid licence.  To get your licence you will need a provisional licence. You can apply for this online.

You'll find a comprehensive listing of the vehicles you can drive or ride and the minimum ages on the Direct.gov website.

Your theory test

Once you’ve received your provisional licence and found a driving instructor you can take your driving theory test.

Revise the Highway Code and ask someone you trust to test you on it.  You can test out your knowledge on the practice driving theory test program available at the Connexions centre.  Just pop in and ask if you can have a go.

If you pass your theory test and your instructor is happy with your progress they may encourage you to take your driving test.

Owning a car

Getting your first car is an exciting - and expensive - milestone in your life, but if you don't know what you're doing you can easily be ripped off.  Follow the advice about buying and selling vehicles provided on the Direct.gov website.

Driving with a disability

Living with a physical disability shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying the independence driving can bring. One of the most obvious things to consider when buying a car is choosing one which meets or can be adapted to your needs.  Find out how the Motability Scheme can help.
