There are loads of ways to travel in and around Bolton if you don’t have a car. As a young person you can enjoy discounted rail and bus travel.
Walking and cycling
Walking and cycling are great ways to exercise and explore the place where you live. Many people never really get to know their home town because they’re always driving around.
If you want to get to know Bolton and beyond or just need to get some fresh air you can use the miles of foot and cycle paths around the area. Check out the Sustrans website for more information.
By train
A 16-25 Railcard gives you one third off the price of train tickets. You can get one at a station ticket office and start using it straight away. You do have to pay, but it will pay for itself even if you only use the train a few times a year. All you need is proof of your age and a passport size photo.
By bus
You will need an igo travel pass if you are 11 to 16 years old and live or go to school in Greater Manchester. You can get cheaper bus fares with the igo pass. It costs £5 and lasts until 31st August after the holder's 16th birthday. Download an application form from www.tfgm.com/igo.
If you are 16-18 and attending a school sixth form, a sixth form college or college of further education full-time, you may be eligble for a Scholar's Concessionary Permit or it might be better for you to have a weekly travel pass. Use the Transport for Greater Manchester website and staff to find out what the best travel options are for you. You can also ask at the Travelshop on Bolton bus station.
