work Experience

Work experience gives you an insight into the world of work. School work experience placements are arranged through your school in partnership with Bolton and Bury Education Business Partnership (EBP).  You'll get the chance to do a two-week placement in either Year 10 or Year 11.

Every effort will be made to make sure you get a work experience placement that best matches the type of job you want to do when you finally complete your education.  Unfortunately this isn't always possible.  If you find yourself in this situation don't be too disappointed.

There's more to work experience than just sampling a job - it's about learning to get up earlier than you would do normally, being organised with your travel arrangements, experiencing what it's like to work alongside people of all ages, working longer hours, learning how to behave in the workplace and generally being treated as an adult with adult responsibilities.

Some degree courses include a work experience component especially Sandwich Courses.  Use the UCAS website to find where these are offered.

The LASE Scheme

LASE stands for Looked After Supported Employment and the scheme is for ‘looked after’ young people in Bolton aged between 16 and 19. It offers young people the chance to experience employment in local businesses, but with additional support that some people find really useful.

The scheme provides a workplace mentor to every young person taking part who will offer support, supervision and encouragement whenever necessary. This scheme offers a training allowance of £20 a day, as well as a possible £13 a week towards travel costs and £5 a day towards living costs, for those living independently.

Everyone who completes certain parts of the scheme is guaranteed quality references for future employers, which is a really useful tool in today’s competitive job market.

Placements are organised to suit individual needs and can vary from 2 to 5 days per week and from 1 to 6 months in duration.
