Changing jobs

Everyone needs a change every now and again and moving jobs is a good way to develop your career, get a better salary, gain new skills and enjoy fresh challenges.

The best time to look for a new job is when you’re actually in a job as it proves to employers that you’ve already got the workplace skills they’re after.

If you’re looking to change job completely and start a new career then it makes sense to look into retraining and only leave your current job when you have planned the training you need.

Where to get help and advice

So you've reached a stage in your current job where you feel that you want to move on to something new.  You'll use all the same job search techniques you used to get your current job to find a new one.  However, if you are over 19 you will need to use the Jobcentre rather than the Connexions Service.

We produce a handout called Turning 20 which includes details of organisations that can provide adults with careers information, advice and guidance as well as other services to help increase your chances of getting a job.

You may also want to use the services of a recruitment agency.  We produce a list of the recruitment agencies in Bolton to get you started.

Fed up with your current job?

If your current job hasn't lived up to your expectations you may be feeling you want to get out and find something new.  That's fine, but be careful not to do anything rash.

  • Never leave a job without getting a new one first.  It's always easier to get a job from a job.
  • Don't hand in your notice until you have signed an employment contract with your new employer.
  • Be dignified when you leave your current job even if you might feel you want to give your current employer a piece of your mind.  You may need a reference from them in the future.
