Your Rights

Your Rights

You may not be an adult in the eyes of the law, but you still have rights.  They say how we should be treated as employees, consumers and human beings.

Discrimination

As a citizen of the UK, the law says we have the right to be treated the same as everyone else.  To be treated differently, denied access to jobs, services or support because of what you look like or where you come from, is know as discrimination.

If you think you aer being discriminated against at school, at work or even in your community, speak out.  Connexions exists to support all young people, and our Personal Advisers give the same service to everyone.

You can get help and advice with understanding your rights at your local Citizens Advice Bureau, or find out about welfare rights at Bolton Welfare Rights Service - both of which can be accessed with help from your Personal Advisor.

I have a disability

You have the same rights as people without a disability.  There are two acts of parliment that make this a legal right.  These are the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) Act 1999.  They cover everything from jobs to education and transport.

The Equal and Human Rights Commission is an organisation set up by Parliment to make sure no one is discriminated against.  They also help people with disabilities access help in their daily lives.

If you feel that others are getting different or better treatment than you, whatever the situation and whoever is doing it, you have the right to complain.  Visit your local Connexions centre for mroe advice.
